I was approached yesterday by one of my clients (for whom I’m shooting this year’s Relentless Boardmasters festival in Cornwall this August) asking if I would be willing to shoot some sets for a new website he is producing. Now, I’m not totally sure of the details of what he is looking for — the details will be worked out if I choose to accept the job — but basically he’s looking for glamour / softcore erotic photographs.
This obviously throws up a few issues, both morally and technically. [read more]
I like to think I’m not one to be taken in by TV adverts. In fact I don’t generally see many adverts on TV — the majority of things I watch are on the BBC, and those things which aren’t I generally don’t sit and watch, they’re just on in the background (Sunday’s omnibus of Come Dine With Me on More4 is the background to my weekly flat cleaning efforts). So I recon there are only two reasons I’d really notice what’s being advertised — an attractive young lady, or something a little bit different. Both of these have caught my attention of late. I’ve been thinking: as a photographer I don’t take enough photos. I don’t mean that in reference to work — when I’m working at an event I shoot hundreds of pictures — but rather in my day-to-day life. I never leave the house without a camera, either one of my work cameras, my general compact, or my phone (which has a better CCD built in than my first digital camera had (although the lens leaves plenty to be desired)), but I just don’t stop to take pictures when I’m out and about of the things which make up my every day life.
So I’ve decided to change this. My plan is to take a picture every day. The pictures might be anything — something I did, something which interested me, just something I saw — but whatever the pictures end up being, the hope is that they will build up a montage of my life.
I can’t promise I’ll upload the images every day and, I can’t even promise I’ll manage to get an image every day, but I will do my best and I’ll let you know how I get on. You can follow the images on my daily photo gallery.

This was the view from my window at 7.35am on the 2nd of February 2009 following what they say was the heaviest snow fall in the UK for nearly 20 years.
I’m not sure that’s true though. I’ve lived in the north for most of my life, and it’s not unknown to get pretty heavy snow up there. I remember one winter not long after we had moved to Halifax there was a heavy snowfall. It came on very quickly and people weren’t prepared. The council opened the town hall up to look after people stranded in the town centre for the night and schools were closed. But the council did their thing and next day everything was back to normal.
It’s funny how people can make you feel so cut out. I’m sure they didn’t mean it, but by standing just outside my room and more or less whispering to each other, it feels like they were more or less just trying to exclude me from the conversation. Funnily enough, when Tim left they started talking at a normal volume — admittedly Polish, but that’s just natural given they are both Polish. Am I thinking this because I don’t like him? Am I just over reacting?
Phew, it’s been longer than it should have been. I was going to tell you about the drinks with Dana, Tim and co. a couple of weekends ago and I also need to catch up with last week and end. So here goes. I’ll try to be brief! [read more]
Following Microsoft’s announcement to cut 5,000 jobs a certain someone has flown into (yet another) panic. Actually, it was just another thing which has made him get on the phone rather than engaging his own brain.
I finally said this to Dana the other day. I got a lift back home with a friend early last week and as I was coming back into the house I saw Dana standing looking concerned on the phone. I commented to my friend that she was probably on the phone to Tim. She was, and I couldn’t help but overhear a bit of the conversation.
Either my new look is working, or at least two people were very drunk on Saturday night. Given that I know at least two people were very drunk on Saturday night it doesn’t sound all that promising, but I’m not going to let that get me down. [read more]
Last year I made three resolutions. One of which was to get this blog off the ground. That’s one I managed to keep. Another was to make a difference in my working life. To some extent I managed that — I have a new online presence and I’ve stepped up self promotion. The third I can’t remeber, which probably means I haven’t managed it. [read more]
Welcome to 2009, if a little late.
To be honest I don’t have much to write about over Christmas and New Year. Christmas day was spent at my brother’s house in York. My parents collected my Grandma on Christmas eve, she stayed at their house for the night, we went to York about lunch time on Christmas day, and then my parents took Grandma home again that night. I got to stay at my brother’s for the night. That was OK in the end. I was a little worried about how that would go — my brother and I aren’t really all that close, although we do get on well, and I’m not really all that talkative — but it turned out fine. We played a board game which I won, and my brother’s wife got a little bit tipsy which made conversation go a little more easily. [read more]
