Turning down work

Post length: 737 words, about 3 and a half minutes.

It doesn’t happen often but last weekend, amongst all the other turbulent events, I got an offer of work which I decided to turn down.  And it seems I made the right choice. [read more]

Sometimes we all crave a little attention

Post length: 1,634 words, about 7 and a half minutes.

“dont hate me when stories are told”, that’s the message the person I, urm, ‘got to know’ on Friday night posted on her boyfriend’s Facebook wall on Saturday. [read more]

It seems there's no escape

Post length: 419 words, almost 2 minutes.

It’s strange how some people are trendy for a while and are all over the place.  It seems to be that the trendy idiot of the moment is Alan Carr.  Given that he’s not very good, his agent must be fantastic.  He really does get on my nerves — I’ve yet to identify anything with his act which isn’t just annoying.  While Justin Lee Collins moved on to make some light hearted documentary type programmes, Alan seems to have just gone on to do anything he possibly could.  And he doesn’t bring anything to any of them.  I thought that maybe I’d be safe listening to BBC Radio 2, but no — his irritating voice popped up there too.  Lets hope he’ll burn out reasonably quickly, although I guess that would just leave a gap for the next one to come along and be in everything… [read more]

Another 6 months

Post length: 747 words, about 3 and a half minutes.

What a twat.  Excuse my language, but what a fucking twat.

Guess who I’m talking about.  Yeah, it’s Tim.  Dana’s not very well — she’s got a pain in her lower abdominal area which has been bothering her for a few days, and today it got worse.  So she went to the doctor today and they gave her some antibiotics for the infection she’s had, but they also said it might be apendicitis.  That’s a bit worrying in my eyes and I know it can take a turn for the worse very quickly. CCTV, 90210

Post length: 569 words, about 2 and a half minutes.

The past few days have been a bit different with regards to work for me.  I’ve been installing an over-ip CCTV system as part of a new data centre install.  It’s an interesting cross over between the areas I usually work in — computers and photography.  It’s also been lots of hard work. Fallout from a fickle industry

Post length: 930 words, just over 4 minutes.

So Tim lost his job.  Oh well.

Let me explain.  Tim is an animator, he draws stuff.  Currently he works for Rare, a computer game studio owned by Microsoft.  It seems that this industry, like most industries based around the arts, is pretty fickle and unstable.  When there’s work on it’s great, when there isn’t then there’s a whole load of talented people all looking for work doing the same thing.  His contract was only ever short — 3 months I think initially extended to 6 months — working on the little rip-off Wii Mii things Microsoft are releasing as part of their XBox 360 dashboard enhancements this autumn.  He heard today that they wouldn’t be extending his contract simply because they don’t have any work for them to do. Welcome

Post length: 258 words, just over 1 minute.

Welcome to Carreg’s blog.  This is a personal blog kept mostly for fun, as a record of my life, and as a place to say what I really think and feel.  While I currently work in technology I have no intention of this blog becoming a technical resource — there are plenty of those around and I want an outlet for my artistic side — that’s not to say I won’t mention things in passing as, for most people, work makes up for a considerable part of my life. Punch drunk

Post length: 1,247 words, about 5 and a half minutes.

It’s an unnerving experience when you are buried in your work, take a quick break, look out of the window and find yourself looking either at the ground or up into the air.  Still I’m not going to complain – it’s a good thing because it means the train is managing to reach it’s top speed.  On the way up north we were stuck in ‘non-tilt mode’, apparently.  This time we clearly are not.  I think I could make that say something about how the south views the north, but I’m sure it’s nothing to do with that. My reasoning

Post length: 729 words, just over 3 minutes.

Note: This entry was written before this blog was launched.  A long time before this blog was launched.

Another train.  Going to the same place as usual.  Somewhere near the beginning of last year (February, in fact) I decided it would be good to start a blog.  And so I wrote an entry while sitting on a train, going to Lancaster.  I’d often thought about it before then and when I was in school, going to college, and even in my first year at university, I wrote on the open diary.  But then I got busy.  I got involved with things at university and following that started working.  All this real life stuff gets in the way of writing things down.  Anyway, last year I decided I’d start a blog and write about me, my life, and everything that goes with it.  Obviously with this momentous decision came some choices which have to be made: should it be public or private(?); should I use one of the handles I’m known by at the moment(?); do I want people I know to know it’s me(?); what software should I use(?).  Some of the answers to these questions were easier than others.  Let me run through my choices. Busy train, broken train.

Post length: 727 words, just over 3 minutes.

This train’s not going anywhere very quickly. At least not long distances – we keep stopping but we’ve yet to find out why.  The man on the other side just told someone he was supposed to be getting into Watford for 9pm, but I suspect we’re running late now.  Of course there’s no way to tell.  I’ll be ok, it doesn’t matter if this train is a little late just so long as I don’t miss the last train back from London to Aldershot, which I’d class as ‘highly unlikely’.  Still a delay doesn’t help matters, and it would be nice if they were to tell us why exactly we do keep stopping.
